With any new technology, there are some people who use it for noble endeavors and others who use it for malevolent purposes. ChatGPT, the transformative artificial intelligence (AI) platform developed by OpenAI, gives people a new creation and research tool, but it also spawned nefarious activity aimed at defrauding people.
AI tools such as WormGPT, WolfGPT and FraudGPT are now part of the suite of technologies scammers use to defraud millions of people every year.
Don’t Miss:
- Until 2016 it was illegal for retail investors to invest in high-growth startups. Thanks to changes in federal law, this Kevin O’Leary-backed startup lets you become a venture capitalist with $100.
- Many NBA players, including LeBron James, have ventured into fine wine investments as an alternative asset. Now you can too with just $25.
Because of the learning nature of AI tools, each of these programs continues to evolve and become more sophisticated. WormGPT can review past phishing email campaigns and develop changes to improve the success rate of future emails. It does not have the generative content safeguards used by ChatGPT or Google's Bard, which prevent abuse and reduce their usage by various threatening actors. Even with safeguards, there are ways for people to circumvent those controls and use ChatGPT and other AI tools for malicious purposes.
ChatGPT is a powerful research tool, and criminals can use its prowess to gain valuable information. They could use ChatGPT to look through public information to find the IT vendor used by a financial institution, and then create a phishing campaign around that information.
Tools like WormGPT enable bad actors to create realistic-looking attacks at scale. It can provide scammers with the tools to commit attacks in multiple languages and create a wide variety of professional-looking phishing emails. Its generative language capabilities enable it to draft communications modeled after a company's legitimate emails. For example, it could review real emails from Chase Bank and use that content as a template for developing new fraudulent emails with links to sites that ask for login credentials.

WormGPT creates deceptive communications such as phishing emails. These trick individuals into divulging sensitive data, like passwords or credit card details. WolfGPT is a malicious AI tool used to create malware and other harmful software. FraudGPT facilitates the fabrication of counterfeit websites and other online scams.
Common scams perpetrated by AI tools include CEO impersonation emails, where fraudsters create emails that appear to come from high-level executives that encourage partners or employees to provide access credentials or banking information. They also frequently create lottery scam communications that suggest the recipient won a prize and needs to take online action to claim winnings.
FraudGPT generates counterfeit websites mimicking legitimate platforms, enabling the theft of personal or financial data. It uses AI to improve the look and feel of these sites, making them appear more legitimate and removing some of the markers that could previously indicate a user was encountering an inauthentic site.
With WolfGPT, scammers can create malware that is better at avoiding detection, making it harder to stop with anti-malware programs. It's a black-hat tool for creating powerful cryptographic malware, which can be used in various cyberattacks, including advanced phishing campaigns. It also offers confidentiality, making it a preferred tool for cybercriminals who prioritize secrecy.
