When buying whisky, most people think about visiting their local spirits store and spending $50 to $100 on a bottle. While that's fine for everyday consumption, there's something you need to know: Investing in alcohol, including whisky, is growing as an investment vehicle.
In 2019, Sotheby’s auctioned a bottle of The Macallan 1926 Fine & Rare for a then-record-breaking $1.9 million, solidifying its status as the most coveted Scotch whisky. But that was just the start.
If investing in whisky bottles isn't the right fit, turn your attention to startups in the space. For example, Lit Vodka is raising funds from retail investors on the StartEngine platform. As an ultra-premium brand distilled in Atlanta, Georgia, it stands out for its clean taste and carbon-filtering process. Lit has quickly gained attention in the industry, marked by swift sales growth and strong consumer demand.

Ultra Rare Whisky Astonishes By Selling For $2.7 Million At Auction
A Macallan 1926 bottle, one of only 40 aged for 60 years in sherry casks, sold for a record $2.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction in London on Nov. 18. This rare whisky, the oldest Macallan vintage, surpassed expectations, fetching far more than the anticipated $934,274 to $1.4 million. Notably, this particular bottle was one of 12 adorned with labels by Italian painter Valerio Adami.
Sotheby’s whisky expert Jonny Fowle, who sampled The Macallan 1926, described it as rich with dried fruit, spice and wood. These bottles, initially not sold but offered to select Macallan clients, hold significant allure. The sale featured a reconditioned bottle, the first of its kind, undertaken by The Macallan Distillery.
The auction also highlighted the diversity of The Macallan 1926 collection. Twelve other bottles were labeled by renowned artist Sir Peter Blake, and two were released unlabelled. One of these, painted by Irish artist Michael Dillon, was the first whisky bottle to exceed $1.2 million in 2018, selling for $1.5 million.
Just the same as any investment, there's no guarantee when it comes to whisky, wine and other types of alcohol, but this story is proof that the market is coming alive at a time when alternative investments are in high demand.
