'Reagan Was Awesome,' Says Elon Musk – Here's Why His Followers Are Pushing Back

On any given day, Elon Musk tweets dozens of times on his social media platform X. Recently, he replied to a tweet quoting Reagan's 1989 farewell address, in which the former president reflected on his achievements in office.

Don't Miss:

Musk's simple reply– “Reagan was awesome” – sparked immediate reactions from many of his millions of followers with very different views.

The Praise for Reagan

In the original tweet Musk responded to, Reagan was portrayed as the president who led a strong economic recovery, helped the U.S. create millions of jobs, and restored America's reputation on the world stage.

Reagan reflected on a moment in 1981 when he attended an economic summit, recalling that global leaders were suddenly looking to him for guidance on what was being called the “American miracle.”

Reagan is often credited with lowering taxes, reducing government regulations, and boosting the U.S. economy. For people like Musk, who admire pro-business policies and economic growth, it's easy to see why Reagan's presidency might stand out.

The Pushback from Followers

However, Musk’s fondness for Reagan is not universal. Many of his supporters were quick to highlight the less “awesome” aspects of Reagan’s legacy, emphasizing the ways his policies negatively impacted regular Americans.

For example, one of the most biting critiques came from a user who said, "He’s the main reason for nearly every modern issue in the United States. He gave substantial tax cuts to the rich and abandoned the middle class and poor," before mentioning how Reagan allowed factories to move overseas, which hurt American workers and contributed to the decline of the middle class.

Other users criticized Reagan's impact on education. They pointed out that during his administration, billions of dollars were cut from student aid programs. Reagan’s policies appeared to many to benefit the wealthy at the expense of the underprivileged.

Not all detractors focused solely on economic concerns. Some pointed to other contentious aspects of his presidency, such as his reduction of government funding for mental health programs, which led to an increase in homelessness, especially among the mentally ill.

One user mentioned Reagan's role in breaking the Air Traffic Controllers’ union strike and even accused him of shady dealings, like drug trafficking through the CIA to fund foreign wars.

Nevertheless, here are some positive responses:

  • “Yes, he was! America loved him!”
  • “Yeah, and he recognized Russia as a serious threat and an evil empire. Modern-day Republicans could learn a lot from Reagan.”
  • “Reagan was awesome because he was nothing like Trump.”
  • “I met Reagan in person. I have never met a more decent man. I would add him to Mount Rushmore.”

The responses from Musk’s followers show just how divided people still are about Reagan. Some see him as a hero for supporting businesses and reducing government influence. Others criticize him for policies they believe increased economic inequality and social division, problems they think began during his time in office.
