Mark Cuban: 'Getting Filthy, Stinkin' Rich Is One Of The Most Patriotic Things You Can Do.' That's The American Dream

Billionaire business owner Mark Cuban considers amassing enormous wealth among the most patriotic things an American can accomplish, rather than just a personal accomplishment. Cuban believes the potential to amass billions proves that the American dream still exists.

During a recent interview on Netflix's series What's Next? with fellow billionaire Bill Gates, Cuban emphasized that building wealth isn’t the problem many make it out to be. Instead, he sees it as a sign of the opportunities America offers. "Yeah, having a billion dollars, that’s kinda crazy," he admitted. "[But] that’s not the problem. That’s a symptom of something amazing. It's the American dream. That's what makes America special."

For Cuban, being wealthy is an incredible opportunity to use that wealth to create opportunities for others. In fact, to him, "One of the most patriotic things you can do as an American is go out and get filthy, stinkin' rich, create a ton of jobs, invest in your company and others, and then pay your taxes."

Cuban argues that when people build successful businesses, they're not just making money for themselves – they provide jobs, pay suppliers, and contribute to the economy. And when it comes to taxes, Cuban takes pride in what his money helps support. "When I write that check to the IRS for all those hundreds of millions of dollars, it’s not that I like it, but I am proud of it because the roads, the military, the police, teachers, Medicaid, Medicare – that's a big part of where our taxpayer dollars go," he explained.

Cuban's journey to becoming a billionaire began when he sold his internet-radio company, Broadcast.com, to Yahoo in 1999 for $5.7 billion. He didn't stop there. Since then, he's invested in various businesses, including the Dallas Mavericks, pharmaceutical startups, and countless small businesses through his role as a judge on Shark Tank.

Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drug Co. is one of his most recent endeavors. He founded it to address the issue of astronomical prescription medicine costs. His online pharmacy aims to lower the cost of health care for millions of Americans by selling prescription drugs at a low markup, and Cuban sees this as just another opportunity to give back and use his money for the benefit of society.

Not everyone shares Cuban's view on billionaires. According to the Pew Research Center, a larger portion of the country’s total income is now going to higher-income households, while the amount going to middle- and lower-income households is shrinking. Thus, many critics argue that wealth inequality is growing and that many, if not most, of the superrich don't pay their fair share of taxes
