'Release Elon Musk On The Federal Government!' Kevin O'Leary Backs Musk's Cost-Cutting Power

Elon Musk has garnered considerable attention during this election and not just for his strides with SpaceX. Beyond his public endorsement of former President Donald Trump's campaign, Musk and Trump have also been discussing creating a "government efficiency commission" to reduce federal spending.

Most recently, Trump told Fox News, "We’ll have a new position – secretary of cost-cutting, OK? Elon wants to do that."

Don't Miss:

Kevin O'Leary, a prominent business owner known for his role on Shark Tank, has expressed enthusiasm for Musk's potential to streamline government operations. When Fox News asked O'Leary if he thought a government outsider could take on a role like Trump is proposing for Musk, O'Leary responded that the federal government needs a role like this, whether for Republicans or Democrats.

O'Leary says this is a bipartisan issue and that someone needs to put government spending in check – and he thinks Musk has the execution skills to get the job done. "I would pay to see the movie where they unleash Elon Musk on the federal government in looking for efficiencies," O'Leary said. "That is a great idea! I hundred percent endorse this. He would do a fantastic job for every single taxpayer. Release the hounds! Let’s go!"

Potential Challenges and Criticisms

Despite the enthusiasm from O’Leary and other supporters, the idea of Musk heading a government efficiency commission has faced significant criticism. Detractors argue that while Musk has a proven track record in the private sector, applying those principles to government operations may not be as straightforward.

Critics also worry that significant reductions in federal spending could lead to cuts in essential programs like Social Security and Medicare. Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor, has called the proposal "absurd," warning that Musk's approach would inevitably lead to benefit reductions. Reich emphasized that entitlement programs comprise a large portion of the federal budget and meaningful cuts would be difficult without impacting these services.

The Path Forward

Musk has publicly supported reducing government inefficiencies, often referring to the need to rein in bureaucracy and unnecessary spending. However, the specifics of what a Musk-led commission might look like remain unclear. As Trump and his allies continue to promote the idea, the proposal will likely be a topic of debate as the election approaches.

Musk's potential role in government remains speculative, but one thing is certain: if given the chance, his approach to cutting costs could shake up the traditional ways of running government. Whether that would result in more efficiency – or unintended consequences for taxpayers – remains to be seen.
