After waking up in the morning and seeing his RV was gone, a man going by Derek initially couldn't remember if he brought his RV home, or how it could possibly be missing. Then he decided to check the dashcam footage from his Tesla Inc TSLA vehicle. That's when he saw his RV stolen in under 5 minutes by two men, according to Canada's Global News.
All Tesla vehicles sold today are surrounded by cameras, and if the owner chooses, those cameras are always recording. This comes standard on every Tesla and is referred to as sentry mode.
Back in July, Tesla's sentry mode helped catch Porsche thieves, and now it has returned this family's RV to them. After the footage was shared with police, they were able to spread the footage, which led to tips from the public that allowed them to find the RV.
Benzinga's Take: Originally, Tesla vehicles did not have this sentry mode ability. It was enabled with a software update that owners received for free with their car connected to wifi.
Tesla vehicles often receive these updates that contain improvements to the car and features. It was great that this owner had sentry mode active in the driveway, which responded to the motion of the thieves.
