General Motors Company GM is planning to produce its own line of EV motors, taking a page out of Tesla Inc's TSLA vertically integrated book.
This move should help GM become more efficient and give the Detroit automaker more control over its product line.
A Wednesday report from Reuters details GM's plans for five drive units and three motors that are called the “Ultium Drive” system, named after GM's Ultium custom batteries.
The new drive systems will fit into many form factors, from pickup trucks to sports cars.
GM “designed these drive units simultaneously with a full gambit of electric vehicles that fill out our portfolio,” Adam Kwiatkowski, GM’s executive chief engineer for global electrical propulsion, told Reuters.
GM expects this approach to lower cost and size, while increasing the range and efficiency of the company's electric vehicles, the report said.
GM will still consider purchasing some parts from suppliers, a GM spokesman told the wire service.
