Meta Platforms Wants To Use OpenAI For Coding, But The Cost Is 'Crazy' High

Zinger Key Points
  • Meta Platforms is reportedly interested in developing an internal AI coding assistant.
  • Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has said the cost of working with OpenAI is extremely high.

Artificial intelligence has been a popular theme on Wall Street in 2023, and OpenAI's ChatGPT has gotten a lion's share of the headlines. Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta Platforms, Inc. META is reportedly interested in developing an internal AI coding assistant using OpenAI's technology, but Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has reportedly said the cost is extremely high.

ChatGPT could eventually be a huge cash cow for Microsoft Corp MSFT, which has invested $13 billion in OpenAI. In a recent Q&A session, Bosworth said Meta has had discussions with Microsoft and OpenAI about developing something similar to GitHub's AI Copilot to assist Meta engineers with coding. "The cost is crazy," Bosworth said. "They want to charge like seven cents a query or something, which is pretty high."

Why So Expensive? He went on to explain the high cost comes from Meta needing OpenAI to understand the company's code base without integrating it into the model. At this point, Bosworth said the AI coding assistant projects are the only area in which Meta is working with OpenAI. Instead, the company is focused on building its own internal AI infrastructure. "We are moving very fast. I think We'll have something to play with internally, I'm hoping in mid-June, maybe late July," Bosworth said.

Benzinga's Take: AI will be a game changer for the entire technology sector, but companies are still in the early innings of understanding how AI technology can help, what risks are involved and what the economics of AI integration will be. Meta and OpenAI may not agree to a deal this time, but there's no question AI will be a critical opportunity for Microsoft for many years to come.
