Zinger Key Points
  • Karp predicted that AI technologies will bring about structural shifts and create winners and losers.
  • The Palantir CEO said the technological revolution will significantly impact both the political and economic spheres globally

Palantir Technologies Inc PLTR CEO Alex Karp provided his insights on artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models at the 2023 Copenhagen Democracy Summit this week.

His thoughts were aimed at highlighting the pivotal role of AI on the battlefield and its potential implications in the commercial sector. Karp's commentary explored the importance of recognizing AI's rapidly increasing significance on the world stage.

"Large language models are both very valuable, but they kind of hallucinate sometimes they don't do math well, there's no memory function and they can't tell you how they got to their conclusion," Karp said, while speaking at the event on Tuesday. "But wielded correctly, [they] can change businesses and will change the battlefield."

Karp highlighted that significant advancements in AI are predominantly occurring in the United States, despite the ongoing tumultuous socio-political climate. "These things are largely produced in America," Karp said. "You have this country which is producing just where the tech landscape has shifted dramatically in the last year. And it shifted because of software developments."

Karp underscored the technological prowess of the U.S. while cautioning against underestimating potential adversaries like China and Russia. "America's primary adversary, which is mainland China and Russia, are, you know, there's a tendency to underestimate our adversary. I'm constantly yelling at people at home that that's really not smart," he said.

Reflecting on the potential impact on the global economy, Karp predicted that the adaptation and adoption of these technologies would bring about structural shifts and create winners and losers. "The short version is these large language models make people who are winning much stronger," he noted. "Enterprises, governments, and those that are resistant, parochial, only want to buy these things from their buddy, their friend, their own country, are really going to suffer."

Karp's comments signaled a clear message about the growing divide between those who can leverage AI and those who resist or underestimate its power. According to the Palantir CEO, the technological revolution will significantly impact both the political and economic spheres globally, potentially widening the gap between technologically advanced nations and those that lag behind.
