Tesla Inc TSLA is reportedly enhancing its collaboration with Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg. Co. Ltd. TSM by doubling its order for the Dojo supercomputer chip, D1, this year.
What Happened: According to The Economic Daily, as shared by DriveTeslaCanada, the electric automaker’s increased order would see the production of 10,000 units of the D1 chip, which is integral to the operation of their Dojo supercomputer.
Although there was no official confirmation from either Tesla or TSMC, sources revealed the partnership planned to expand further with the expectation of increased orders into 2024 and 2025. The companies previously collaborated on Tesla’s Hardware 4.0 self-driving computer.
Why It Matters: Unveiled in 2021, the Dojo supercomputer was instrumental in developing Tesla's autonomous driving technology by facilitating the swift analysis of extensive video data collected from Tesla’s vehicle fleet, eliminating the need for manual human analysis.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk disclosed plans to invest more than $1 billion in the Dojo project by the end of 2024. The supercomputer enabled the efficient training of AI models, which was pivotal for the advancement of Tesla’s self-driving capabilities, allowing for a significant reduction in the reliance on human input for data processing.
Tesla anticipated the application of the Dojo supercomputer would not be restricted to autonomous vehicles. The company signaled the technology could also play a significant role in robotics and various autonomous systems.
