Elon Musk's Former X Executive Joins Rival Sam Altman's World Network To Lead Policy Initiatives

Nick Pickles, who previously led global affairs at Elon Musk‘s social media platform X, has taken a new role with Sam Altman, a known rival of Musk. Pickles will serve as chief policy officer for Altman’s “Tools for Humanity,” which is developing technology for the World Network, formerly Worldcoin.

What Happened: Pickles, who stepped down from X in September, highlighted the growing importance of distinguishing real users from AI bots online.

Pickles’ new employer, World Network, is advancing its efforts to scan irises using “orb” devices to create World ID, a digital passport verifying human identity online. This move comes amid scrutiny over data collection practices.

Pickles also expressed optimism about potential regulatory changes under President-elect Donald Trump‘s administration, with plans to hire a Washington lobbyist as a priority.

Why It Matters: Pickles’ departure from X in September was a significant move, considering his long-standing role and close association with CEO Linda Yaccarino. His decision to leave came amid regulatory challenges and an advertising crunch faced by X.

The social media landscape has been evolving where Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022 led to substantial industry shifts. Musk’s purchase of Twitter for $44 billion was driven by his commitment to free speech and reducing content moderation. However, advertisers are having a roller coaster experience with X, with many of them leaving and some coming back after a year long boycott. X also faces rising competition from other platforms like BlueSky, Meta’s Threads and more.
