Tesla Inc. TSLA senior design executive Franz von Holzhausen said on Sunday that the EV maker expects to add more performance to its Model S and X going forward.

What Happened: “There is always more performance,” Holzhausen said in an interview with Ryan McCaffrey published on YouTube over the weekend. “Humans’ quest for speed will never end.”

While the company is aiming for peak performance with the upcoming Roadster, some of the technology could trickle down to other cars, Holzhausen said.

“Roadster is like our racing program…a lot of other companies go racing to try to learn how to bring faster, better stuff to their products…,” Holzhausen said.

Tesla executive Lars Moravy said in an interview in February that the company will refresh its more premium car offerings, the Model S and Model X, later this year.

Why It Matters: In the past two years, the company has focused on refreshing its cheaper, mass-market offerings.

Tesla launched a refreshed Model 3 in the U.S. in January 2023 and a refreshed version of its best-selling Model Y SUV in January this year.

Moravy said that the company focused on refreshing the Model 3 and Y first as they are higher volume vehicles and refreshing them was needed for the company to stay competitive.

The executive also confirmed that Tesla is indeed working with Elon Musk‘s rocket manufacturing company SpaceX for its upcoming Roadster. Tesla intends to start production of the new Roadster in 2025. The sports car will be a tribute to Tesla's first EV – the limited-production original Roadster produced by the company between 2008 and 2012.

In February 2024, Musk said that the upcoming Tesla Roadster can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 1 second, lower than the company’s initial estimate of 1.9 seconds. The vehicle relies on a collaboration between Musk’s two companies, Tesla and rocket manufacturer SpaceX, to provide the incredible performance, he added.
