Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk and California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday afternoon that Tesla is moving its global engineering headquarters to Hewlett-Packard’s former building in Silicon Valley.
Musk called the move symbolic because Hewlett-Packard, which was split into HP Inc and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, had a significant role in founding Silicon Valley as the tech capital of the United States.
Newsom said that California is home to more than 20 electric vehicle manufacturers, but none of them “dominate” as Tesla does.
Musk thanked Newsom for being one of the first people who put down a deposit for the Tesla Roadster, one of Tesla’s first cars that never hit the mainstream market.
Newsom also said that he is proud that Tesla is a California company, and clarified the company was started in California. Tesla moved its official company headquarters from California to Texas.
Musk seemed to have a slightly more somber tone than he normally does, but he and Newsom were both joking with each other and having fun during the announcement, which was streamed live on Twitter.
Newsom also spoke about California’s commitment to transitioning to sustainable energy and electric vehicles.
