Call of Duty is set to revisit its futuristic setting in 2025 with a direct sequel to Black Ops 2, taking place in the early 2030s.

Leaked information from a focus group, later supported by Insider Gaming, suggests that next year's Call of Duty game will continue the storyline from the 2012 release.

The 2025 Call of Duty game will reportedly pick up where Black Ops 2 left off. That means it’ll push the in-game timeline into the 2030s. The main character from Black Ops 2, David Mason, is rumored to return as the protagonist.

Gameplay Mechanics And Zombies Mode

Some gameplay elements from Black Ops 6 are expected to carry over. This includes the new body shield and Omnimovement mechanics, though with updates such as the ability to throw human shields with grenades attached. Wall jumping is also rumored to be part of the movement system in the upcoming game.

Zombies mode, a long-time favorite feature, is also expected to evolve. It’s expected to have an eight-player mode in development, offering larger cooperative play than in previous installments.

Treyarch's Extended Development Cycle

Treyarch, the developer of the Black Ops series, has had four years to work on Black Ops 6. This marks the longest development period for a mainline Call of Duty game.

This follows the critical reception of Modern Warfare 3, which many players considered to have one of the weakest campaigns in franchise history. In contrast, Modern Warfare 3 was developed over just 16 months, initially planned as an expansion to Modern Warfare 2.

Black Ops 6 is set for release on Oct. 25. It’s the first Call of Duty game to launch on Game Pass after Microsoft Corp's MSFT acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Expectations for the future titles remain high.
