Gov. Waltz Stresses Importance Of Social Equity In Minnesota's Cannabis Market: Marginalized Communities Can't Be Left Behind
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed support for proposals put forth by the state cannabis regulator around social equity cannabis applicants, though calling for caution in approaching policy changes. The Office of Cannabis Management recently indicated that it is considering allowing temporary business licenses, especially for social equity applicants, and is hoping the legislature will consider changes to the licensing process enabling the program's launch in 2025. Walz emphasised that marginalised communities can't be left behind and stated that the aim is to make equity a big part of this. However, the Governor warned that the cannabis regulator needs to propose safeguarding measures to protect against lawsuits questioning preferential treatment given to certain applicants. This came as he referred to a case in federal court where a white farmer is challenging grants specifically provided to women and people of colour to assist them in purchasing initial farms, claiming that he is excluded due to his race.
