Sports injury? Upcoming surgery? Aching joints? There's a browser for that. Google's GOOG new 3-D tool, the Google Body Browser, empowers users to search inside the human body.
With the precision of a surgeon's scalpel, the Google Body Browser allows users to cut through the layers of the human body. The Google Labs project, launched last month, digitizes the anatomy of the human body in 3D. Users can rotate a virtual body, peel back its anatomical layers, zoom in and out, and navigate through its various systems and parts.
Although the Body Browser is much less sophisticated than an edition of Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body, it is predicted to transform the patient-doctor relationship. Doctors can use the tool as a visual and interactive reference tool to educate their patients. Additionally, the browser will aid students, teachers, and physical therapists, as well as anyone with general curiosity about the human body.
The health industry will be waiting to see how consumers will adopt to the new technology. Insiders at Humana HUM, UnitedHealth Group UNH, WellPoint WLP, Health Net HNT will all be watching Google's next moves.
