Under The Hood: Do The DOO

So you want dividends and international developed markets exposure all in ETF that isn't as volatile as a triple-leveraged oil play but one that isn't boring as an ETF that tracks utilities? Well, there might be an ETF for that: The WisdomTree International Dividend ex-Financials Fund DOO, the subject of today's "Under The Hood Segment." The name obviously gives DOO away to some extent, meaning this ETF is financials free. That's not necessarily a bad thing as U.S. financials are not the prettiest of stocks right now and their European counterparts are hardly better off. Rather, DOO focuses on the sectors an investor can really depend on for dividends. Telecom accounts for 17% of the DOO's weight. Utilities get an allocation of almost 16% and energy tops 13%. Industrials and consumer staples also get double-digit weights. DOO's country exposure includes 16% different nations, but three --France, Australia and the U.K. -- account for about 52% of the ETF's weight. Japan is the only other non-European country to factor pominently into DOO's country mix. Investors who haven't gotten familiar with foreign dividend payers ought to because the dividends are usually better and the capital appreciation can be a pleasant surprise as well. In the past year, DOO has outdone the SPDR S&P Dividend ETF SDY and the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF VIG, just to name a couple. The 90-stock ETF features an expense ratio of 0.58% and plenty of foreign stocks many U.S. investors are already familiar with, including Royal Dutch Shell RDS and Total TOT, Europe's largest and third-largest oil companies, National Grid NGG and Vodafone VOD. Long story short: DOO has the makings of an ideal ETF with which to be involved with during a volatile market. Hey, there's nothing wrong with a 4% yield.
