Yesterday we saw the announcement of a merger between AT&T T and T-Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telecom.
We've already heard of who wins in this deal, but who loses?
The tower names are likely to see downside pressure today, and could be a good shorting opportunity. America Tower AMT, SBA Communications SBAC and Crown Castle International Corp. CCI are down sharply in pre-market trading, as consolidation in the space leads to decreased pricing power for the towers.
Sprint S is an obvious loser here, as now no one will acquire the name. Verizon has already said it wouldn't acquire Sprint in the interest of anti-trust, and the other remaining players, Leap Wireless LEAP and MetroPCS PCS are of no incremental benefit to Sprint.
DIRECTV DTV and Dish Network DISH are likely losers, as it removes any possibility of them getting into the telecom game. Both shares are indicated lower.
