RIM CEO Defends BlackBerry Tablet Amid Mediocre Reviews (RIMM)

Lack of e-mail? Can't connect to cellular networks? No mind, says Research in Motion RIMM CEO Jim Balsillie. Mediocre reviews of BlackBerry's new PlayBook aren't worrisome to Balsillie because of future software updates and BlackBerry's reliable user base. “I don't think that's fair,” said Balsillie, 50, in a television interview with Bloomberg News yesterday, noting that more than 60 million BlackBerry users can sync their smartphones and PlayBooks to connect e-mail and Internet. “A lot of the people that want this want a secure and free extension of their BlackBerry.” Further, Balsillie commented that “I like our chances for a lot of share,” he said. “We're very excited about where we are.” Initial reviews of Research in Motion's PlayBook have been largely indifferent. Apple's AAPL iPad has gained a solid user base in its early penetration of the market, and Research in Motion and others must play considerable catch-up. The PlayBook starts at $499 and will go on sale April 19. Shares of Research in Motion closed more down more than 1.5% on Thursday, to $53.92.
