Why Ashton Kutcher is replacing Charlie Sheen on CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men?

Ashton Kutcher is ready to replace Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men, the most popular situation comedy on television, a CBS Corp. (CBS) and Time Warner Inc.'s (TWX) Warner Bros. product. Kutcher has also been dropping hints on Twitter, writing “What's the square root of 6.25″ this morning. The show's creator, Chuck Lorre is hoping Kutcher will bring a younger audience to the show as well as having access to the 6.7 million people who follow him on Twitter.

According to Variety, the show's creators and CBS were hoping to get Kutcher on board by the network's upfront presentation to advertisers next Wednesday in New York City, but yet keep a lid on the news at the same time.

Kutcher gained fame on another sitcom, “That 70s Show,” then focused on film roles (the romantic comedy “No Strings Attached” the most recent) and producing, including the prank show “Punk'd.”

The 33-year-old was approached after Hugh Grant pulled the pin on negotiations with the show's head honchos that would have seen the British actor pocket $1 million per episode to star in the comedy series.

There was speculation Wednesday that Kutcher could parlay his nearly 6.7 million Twitter followers and even bigger Facebook fan club into continued healthy viewership for “Two and a Half Men.”

But Kutcher's effort to use social media to boost “The Beautiful Life,” which he produced for the CW network, proved lackluster: The 2009 series, which was a venture between CBS and Warner Bros., was canceled after just two episodes.
