A powerful computer is needed to process and make decisions about all the data a self-driving car sees on its journeys. An even more powerful computer is needed to train the software that controls the car.

That's why Tesla Inc. TSLA is working on a powerful computer called Dojo, which will be used to train the Tesla neural net that will control the company's self-driving cars.

What Happened: CEO Elon Musk recently said on Twitter that Tesla's neural net training computer Dojo is going to be a "beast," while inviting AI and computer chip experts to join the company and contribute to the project.

In a later tweet, Musk mentioned "a truly useful exaflop," hinting at the future computer project's power. This speed would make Dojo the most powerful supercomputer in the world, with today's lead supercomputer only having around half that amount of data processing power.

Benzinga's Take: Tesla's present method of data labeling uses human labor. Tesla seeks to vastly improve speed and efficiency by moving to a computer/AI labelling approach. This will lead to Tesla rolling out its Full Self-Driving software to owners faster, while making it safer and more reliable.

Tesla is expected to release big updates to Autopilot within next two to six weeks, according to Musk.
