Fuel Tech, Inc. FTEK today announced receipt of a commercial FUEL CHEM® order from a domestic electric utility. Fuel Tech's proprietary TIFI® Targeted In-Furnace Injection™ technology will be installed on two small coal-fired boilers to reduce problems caused by the formation of sulfur trioxide (SO3). Chemical injection is scheduled to commence in this quarter.
Douglas G. Bailey, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “The effects of SO3 formation are becoming increasingly problematic for power plants. SO3 is formed in the boiler by oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which arises from the combustion of solid and liquid fuels containing sulfur, and can also occur as SO2 is oxidized across the SCR catalyst.”
Mr. Bailey concluded, “Given our proven success at other facilities, we are confident that our TIFI approach will achieve SO3 mitigation, slag control and greater fuel flexibility while addressing the environmental and operational issues of SO3 formation.”
