(TheStreet) -The first half of 2011 brought good news for Detroit automakers like Ford F and GM GM, as well as for the auto industry in general as overall sales rose 12.8%. The first half's losers were primarily Japanese manufacturers, who suffered immensely from production woes caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. During the first six months of the year, Ford sales rose 12.4% to 1.07 million vehicles. GM sales rose 16.8% to 1.08 million and Chrysler sales rose 21% to 639,932 units.
