'Wonder Woman 1984' Is Coming To TV And Movie Theaters For Christmas

AT&T's T Warner Bros movie “Wonder Woman 1984” will simultaneously be released in theaters and on HBO Max on Dec. 25, 2020.

What Happened: Due to issues brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, HBO Max subscribers will have the opportunity to watch the new film from home. Warner Bros had postponed the release, which was first expected to debut on Oct. 2.

The film industry has been embracing direct-to-consumer options like streaming movies through HBO. Warner Bros says it remains committed to the theatrical experience and believes giving exhibitors a movie of this nature is important right now.

"To provide a comparable, a little over four million fans in the U.S. enjoyed the first Wonder Woman movie on its opening day in 2017," Jason Kilar, WarnerMedia CEO, said in a blog post. "Is it possible for that to happen again this Christmas with Wonder Woman 1984 between theaters and HBO Max?"

Why This Matters: AT&T owns both Warner Media and HBO Max. The HBO Max app is not available on Roku ROKU devices, although that could change.

The Desk reports AT&T and Roku are near a deal to bring HBO Max to users: "The two sides are close to reaching a deal that would bring the blockbuster streaming service to Roku users for the first time."

Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN has also recently agreed to add HBO Max to its Fire TV products. Many expect "Wonder Woman 1984" could pressure Roku to do the same.
