Florida has gone all-in with its commitment to protect the Sunshine State’s environment. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Department of Health, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in conjunction with a 4-year, $2.5 billion investment promised by the governor to protect Florida’s water quality, are working together to protect and restore Florida’s environment.
A crucial aspect of this effort requires sustainable waste management partners. SusGlobal Energy Corp. SNRG will join the effort in Florida with a new organic waste-processing facility in Fort Myers. The Lee County facility, SusGlobal’s 1st project in the U.S., rounds out 2 other SusGlobal organic waste-processing facilities in Belleville and Hamilton, Ontario.
In all of its facilities, SusGlobal uses patented technology to transform organic waste into nutrient-rich organic compost and pathogen -free liquid fertilizer, diverting organic waste from landfills and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The processes have the double benefit of preventing earth-killing substances like methane from escaping to the atmosphere and producing fuels that can replace the use of nonrenewable sources of energy such as coal, oil, or natural gas.
Organic waste forms a major part of the more than 150 million tons of annual landfilled waste, with food products being the largest at about 24%. And the couple of banana skins you toss in the garbage are a drop in the bucket compared to organic waste generated by industries as diverse as cannabis producers such as Tilray TLRY, vintners such as Vintage Wine Estates VWE, and candy-makers like the Hershey Co. HSY. Then, of course, there are Florida’s citrus growers.
SusGlobal has its work cut out for it in Florida where the perfect storm of downed trees from an actual storm — Hurricane Michael in 2018 — and a buildup of residential waste add to the citrus growers’ 6 billion-pound annual citrus peel disposal urgency. Supply chain and labor shortages caused by the pandemic have only added to the strain. The more SusGlobal can do at its Fort Myers facility to help Florida manage its climate-bruising waste, the better.
In addition to the waste-processing aspects of SusGlobal’s entry into the U.S. market, it sells an organic liquid fertilizer, SusGro™ BioFertilizer. As chemical fertilizers like those sold by entities like Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. SMG become less used, SusGro pathogen-free organic fertilizer provides an economical, sustainable, and highly effective alternative to traditional fertilization.
"The numbers start growing exponentially," SusGlobal CEO Marc Hazout said. "It's a sustainable solution, and certainly during these times where everyone is concerned about climate change, we divert the organic waste streams from landfills and we reduce greenhouse gas emissions — all this as part of our circular economy model. As a result, we're maximizing shareholder value."
It is management's objective to grow SusGlobal into a significant sustainable waste-to-energy and regenerative products provider as Leaders in the Circular Economy®.
