Ebay's CEO John Donahoe Appears on CNBC, Talks X.Commerce and Europe

Ebay's EBAY CEO John Donahoe appeared on CNBC this morning and talked about the prospects for his company. He stated that Ebay, via Paypal, planned to appear in 10-15 retailers this year, more next year, and then the company planned to go global the following year. When asked by CNBC's Jim Cramer, Donahoe said the program is not scaling back. Donahoe stated that consumers can check out easier using Paypal. Donahoe claimed that third party developers will build new applications off Paypal's x. commerce to integrate Paypal, Ebay and other banking systems to accelerate innovation and knowledge that can enhnace payment experience, much how apps on Apple's AAPL iPhone enhanced the smartphone experience. On Europe, he stated that European economies were challenged, but ecommerece remains strong. Donahoe said that the company was seeing "reasonably strong growth"--somewhat benefitting from challenging environment as consumers look to online shopping to stretch their euro. On the technological side, he stated that a closed system will be challenging to get adopted across merchants and retailers and get consumer usage. Any system used has to allow consumers to have choice--the system cannot have different shopping experiences across multiple mobile operating systems. Donahoe stated that the industry will move to a common open standard in the future. He stated that Paypal is contemporary way to give convience and safety for consumers. Donahoe does not view it as zero sum game with Visa V and Mastercard MA because consumers can fund paypal accounts with credit cards.
