With fine spirits, age is everything. For 21 years, California Tequila, Inc. has been crafting what it calls ultra-premium tequilas and other spirits. The company was founded in Orange County, California, by Richard Gamarra with the intention of creating the best tequilas possible.

Under the California Tequila umbrella, Gamarra created AsomBroso as its marquee brand. The name comes from the Spanish word for amazing, which is what the company strives for all its spirits to be. It says that its tequilas are “made with skill, art and passion” and that “AsomBroso tequila is inventive while honoring the long-standing traditional methods.”

Today, Asombroso makes a wide array of tequilas, many of which are award-winning. At one end the company offers its Platino Tequila for around $40, made from 100% Blue agave. The tequila won double gold and “Top Tequila” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

On the high end, the company offers its “Collaboration” extra anejo, priced at over $1,800 a bottle. This tequila is aged 12 years in cabernet sauvignon barrels from Silver Oak Cellars in California and is a prime example of how AsomBroso has, according to the Robb Report, “continued to push the traditional boundaries of tequila production.”

Some of the other innovations the company has brought to market include:

  • Bordeaux-rested reposado
  • 11 year New French Oak-rested tequila
  • Double-barrel-rested extra anejo tequila
  • 10 year Grand Marnier Cognac barrel-rested tequila
  • 6 year double Irish Whiskey barrel-rested tequila
  • 11 year double vintage port barrel-rested tequila

AsomBroso produces its tequilas out of Jalisco, Mexico, long known as a tequila capital, with 100% estate-grown blue weber agave. The facility has been in operation for 45 years, and the tequila it produces is aged for an average of 8 years. Even the bottle is carefully designed, mimicking an 18th-century decanter, which the company believes provides the best vessel for its tequilas.

As AsomBroso looks to the future, it hopes to be a major player in the international spirits market, one currently dominated by Constellation Brands Inc. STZ and Anheuser Busch Inbev SA BUD. It believes that the ultra-premium category is a perfect fit for what the company produces and is a market open to disruption. The company also has entered the fast-growing whiskey market, with a more moderately priced entry called Knucklenoggin.
