In 2010 consumption of refined glycerol (glycerine, glycerin) in European Union (EU) boosted by 21% and accounted for 319,698 tons. The consumption of refined glycerol has been on the rise in recent years and the trend is expected to persist. The growth is explained by increasing demand for new applications, including in production of propylene glycol, epichlorohydrin and aromatic solvents.
EU is a significant producer and consumer of refined glycerol and is ranked second globally. In 2010 the EU production of refined glycerol amounted 503,432 tons, increased by 32% year over year. With 51% market share Germany is the major EU glycerol producer. Recently biodiesel has been the largest supply source for glycerol, where the crude glycerol is a waste product.
European Union is an exporter of glycerol. Approximately 31% of the total amount of refined glycerol produced in EU is exported. The main consumer of EU glycerol is Russian Federation; it shares about 30% of the total EU export deliveries.
