Soldiers of Unmatched Lethality

The United States Army deploys, fights and wins wars by providing sustained land dominance to indefinitely seize and control those things an adversary prizes most — its land, resources and population. The Army fulfills its mission by employing modern manned and unmanned ground combat vehicles, aircraft, sustainment systems and weapons.

Sustainment Systems

The demands for electricity in military field operations are numerous and varied. Electricity powers equipment ranging from rock crushers to missile launchers and many other essential systems to boot. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) uses generators to produce the electrical power needed by military field units.

In addition to supplying the electricity needed to operate and fight, military generators:

  • Reduce logistics footprint
  • Provide high system reliability
  • Improve unit mobility and transportability
  • Reduce operations and maintenance costs
  • Meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air pollution requirements

Reliable generators function as the foundation of an undefeatable army.

In September, Enginuity Power Systems was awarded a $3.67 million contract with the U.S. Army to build 2 hybrid genset prototypes for a variety of operational needs. These 2 to 5 kilowatt (kW) load-following Ruggedized Intelligent Hybrid Generator Sets (RIHGS) incorporate Enginuity’s proprietary 4-stroke mirror-balanced opposed piston engine technology, which provides high efficiency, low emissions and strong durability. The project replaces part of the Army’s aging fleet of traditional generators by a next generation-technology that will serve the DOD for decades to come.

“This DOD-Army contract is a key milestone in Enginuity’s commercialization drive and will expedite the development of not only our ruggedized hybrid genset technology but also our upcoming E|ONE commercial unit,” said Jacques Beaudry-Losique, president of Enginuity Power Systems.

Enginuity is a key partner to the Army as it seeks to modernize the force by experimenting with and developing autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and robotics to make soldiers more effective and units less logistically dependent.

Portable Power

As modern military operations become more reliant on electronics, the necessity of keeping those electronics charged in difficult situations becomes more important than ever. To address this need, Enginuity has produced a lightweight sub-30-pound micro-generator capable of running on military fuel (JP-8) with a 2- to 4kW rating. Enginuity’s Personal Power Pack (P|3) is primarily designed for small-unit military applications. To achieve its low weight, Enginuity integrated an electrical generator and its patented engine architecture into a single unit. By combining the engine and generator into a seamless unit, its engineers were able to cut the weight of the system substantially.

Just as important as the low weight, the P|3 portable generators can run on multiple fuels. Circumstances may dictate that operators of the P|3 may not always have access to standard fuel, so the P|3’s unique ability to run on multiple fuels can be of tremendous value.

Sustaining the Army of the Future

Enginuity Power Systems is one of the leading innovators in the DoD, commercial and residential power generation technology that forms the basis for its upcoming micro-Combined Heat and Power (mCHP) systems, portable power systems and personal power packs.
