By now, most crypto and blockchain enthusiasts have heard of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs as they are commonly called. These tokens are digital representations of assets on a blockchain and are often used for the transfer of assets. They have also found their way into the world of gaming, being used as tradable collectibles and helping to enhance gameplay.
As time has gone on, NFT-based gaming has continued to evolve, with more innovative tokens to be traded and more ways to earn rewards from them. One aspect of NFT gaming that is often overlooked, however, is its storylines. After all, if there are rare NFTs to be had, is the story behind the game all that important?
It turns out that they are, as evidenced by a new NFT-based game called Animalia that not only offers rare NFTs for players but has a rich storyline that cuts to the core of the blockchain and crypto space.
What is Animalia?
Animalia is an NFT-based card trading game that features all trading cards as rare NFTs. Using these NFTs, players can build decks, battle other plays, and so on, which is standard for NFT-based games and card trading games in general.
However, one of the most unique parts of Animalia is the story behind it. All the cards are based on the various animals that are prominently mentioned within the crypto and blockchain world. These include the Shiba Inu dog, bears, bulls, whales, apes, and wolves. The players must choose their ‘titan’ which is either a bull or a bear and the one they pick determines their special character skills.
The backstory behind the game is that the two titans, the bear, and the bull, had engaged in a battle for centuries since the beginning of time, with millions of creatures trying to co-exist between the different factions that sprung up as a result of this conflict. The decoding of an ancient gemstone is thus the key to ending this conflict.
The Animalia universe is divided into two parts, one ruled by the bull and one ruled by the bear. The titans then take each other on in battle, with matches resulting in one-on-one battles between players, who can alternate between turns and play one card from their hand at a time. The goal of the game is to reduce the health of one’s opponent to zero while they try to do the same to you. Whoever achieves this goal first is declared the winner of the game.
The Animalia universe will also introduce more battle setups over time and it also features a marketplace where NFTs can be bought, sold, rented, and so on.
Storytelling With NFTs
As NFTs are becoming more of a mainstay within the gaming sector, there is a lot of exploration of not only what they can do technically but entertaining ways for them to be applied. While simply trading rare NFT cards might be adequate, games like Animalia go the extra mile with innovative world-building that features memes and references to the crypto world and a storyline that keeps the audience engaged.
For NFT-based games to truly compete in the wider market, they have to bring more to the table than just NFTs (after all, consumers can simply buy NFTs from marketplaces) but must also have compelling stores, fun characters, and worlds that players will want to be in, NFTs aside.
