Twitter Inc TWTR says it deletes millions of spam accounts daily to curb social media trolling and name-calling.

"We remove millions of spam accounts every day during the day or shortly after the creation," Preetha Athrey, director of global business marketing for APAC at Twitter, told Business Insider India in an interview.

She added that the app also blocks "a lot of suspected spam accounts each week if they don't pass human verification like captcha, phone or email address."

Athey emphasized that the social media giant has also rolled out many safety features to safeguard its users against targeted attacks and trolls. "Our priority is to keep people on the platform safe, and this is something we constantly do. We review a lot of content and a lot of reports that come to us."

"We constantly communicate about the new safety features to our users we have launched. 'Unmention' to give people more control over their mentions. 'Unmention' lets you untag yourself from a conversation, so you can no longer be mentioned in replies. Additionally, people can also control who engages with the conversations they are starting."

"Through our policies, products, and partnerships, we're already seeing progress happen, and we'll continue to invest in brand safety to make Twitter a safer place for all," she said.

Meanwhile, a court date has been set for Twitter to face off against Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk after he backed out of buying the social media company as it failed to provide data to determine how many users were, in fact, fake or spam accounts.

Price Action: Twitter closed Friday's session 1.76% higher at $41.61, according to Benzinga Pro data.
