Michael Baker Jr., a unit of Michael Baker Corporation BKR,
has been awarded an $8.9 million contract by the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation for the final design of the Daniel Hoan Bridge and the IH-794
Lake Freeway in Milwaukee. Baker's Madison, Wis., office is leading the
project team which includes several Milwaukee area consultants, and will
provide final roadway and structure design, as well as lighting,
environmental, public involvement, traffic, survey and geotechnical services.
Work began on the project in August with completion expected in October 2013.
The project is divided into three segments: IH-794 East-West, between the
Milwaukee River and the Lake Interchange, involving the removal of bridges and
replacement with new structures; Lake Interchange, involving concrete
overlays; and Hoan Bridge, involving the removal and replacement of the
existing bridge deck as well as structural repairs and modifications. The
lifespan of the Hoan Bridge with a new deck is expected to be 40 to 50 years.
“This project will ensure connectivity with the Port of Milwaukee and provide
economic vitality for the Milwaukee area far into the future,” said Baker's
Project Manager, Robert Bondi, P.E. “The Baker team performed the preliminary
design, and we look forward to the challenges this aggressive final design
schedule will present.”
