Trump 2024 Nomination Will Split Republicans And Give Rise To A New Conservative Party, Says Liz Cheney

Donald Trump running for president in 2024 could cause the Republican party to fracture, according to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.).

What Happened: “The party has either to come back from where we are right now, which is a very dangerous and toxic place, or the party will splinter and there will be a new conservative party that rises,” Cheney told NBC News' Chuck Todd.

Cheney is the vice Chair of the Jan. 6 committee — the panel probing the Capitol insurrection that took place in the wake of President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

Why It Matters: The Wyoming representative said in a previous interview that she will not be a Republican if Trump is the nominee for the party in 2024.

“I’m gonna make sure Donald Trump – I’m gonna do everything I can to make sure he’s not the nominee,” Cheney said at the time.

Cheney lost the Republican primary to Trump-backed attorney Harriet Hageman in August. She pointed to President Abraham Lincoln’s example of losing a congressional contest before going on to win the presidency after the election drubbing.
