'This Could Get Really Ugly': What Will Amazon's Q3 Earnings Show After The Bell?

Amazon.com Inc AMZN is set to report its third-quarter financial results after the bell and expectations are low. 

"This could get really ugly tonight," Ritholtz Wealth Management's Josh Brown said Thursday on CNBC's "Fast Money Halftime Report."

What To Know: The Seattle-based company is expected to report earnings of 22 cents per share on quarterly revenue of $127.84 billion, according to Benzinga Pro.

Investors should be watching for positive trends in other business segments outside of retail and e-commerce, Brown said, adding that positive commentary in other divisions is likely necessary to avoid further downside. 

"If they don't have good things to say about trends in cloud, et cetera, this could get real ugly," Brown said.

He told CNBC he isn't convinced that CEO Andy Jassy has figured out how to effectively communicate with shareholders in terms of guidance either.

"[Jeff] Bezos always got away with really doing whatever he wanted as long as he had revenue growth. That's no longer the case with Amazon," Brown said.

The one thing that Amazon has going for it heading into the print is that expectations are low, Brown said: "And sometimes that's a good enough setup."

Regardless of the outcome after the close, Brown noted that he plans to hold Amazon shares for "a very long time."

AMZN Price Action: Amazon has a 52-week high of $188.11 and a 52-week low of $101.26.

The stock was down 3.67% at $111.40 Thursday afternoon.
