It's A Bird, It's A Plane, It's A Flying Car: Chinese EV Company Shows Off Technology (Video)

Zinger Key Points
  • XPeng is one of several companies working on an eVTOL, or electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
  • Video footage from XPeng shows the car taking off, flying and landing.

Electric vehicle company XPeng Inc - ADR XPEV is one of many companies attempting to tackle the Chinese automotive market.

The company recently highlighted with a live demo video its work on flying cars.

What Happened: XPeng is one of several companies working on an eVTOL, or electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. The company showed off video footage of its maiden flight at its recent 1024 Tech Day event.

XPeng highlighted several items the company is working on including its development in the urban air mobility unit called AeroHT, as reported by Electrek.

The report said the footage of the flying car prototype on its maiden flight stole the show for XPeng.

Unlike other eVTOL being developed that look like airplanes and will only operate as flying aircraft, the XPeng vehicle can drive on the road and operate in the air. The vehicle was first shown off at the company’s 1024 Tech Day in 2021 via an animated video.

XPeng said the design of the flying car has been changed to make it safer and more reliable during flights.

The video below shows the XPeng flying car take off and land on its maiden flight.

Why It’s Important: Some will likely be skeptical of the video footage from XPeng and hope to see live demos that are attended by the media to get more validation. The footage came directly from Xpeng and AeroHT.

The other question remains how long it could be before something like this is regulated and able to be produced and fly passengers around the skies. Safety concerns will also be a hot topic as the vehicle goes further in development.

Several eVTOL companies have hit the public markets with funding from major airline companies and other automotive companies. These ventures plan to be able to help with traffic congestion and transport people on short flights.

XPeng’s flying car could stand out the most given its shape and design and ability to drive on the road along with taking to the sky.

XPEV Price Action: XPeng shares were up 0.14% to $7.36 on Friday morning at publication.
