Senate To Examine United-Continental Merger (CAL)

The United Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc. CAL merger has caught the eyes of regulators. The Senate is scheduled to vet the deal this week. The Senate will see if the merger would have a negative impact on competition in the sector. The United Airlines and Continental Airlines (CAL) merger would create the world’s largest airline on the basis of pay-passenger miles. According to the Wall Street Journal, Both the companies have said that the deal was “built to pass” antitrust laws. However, lately the regulators have started taking a tougher stance on mergers. The Wall Street Journal has further reported that on Thursday, the Senate Committee on Science, Commerce and Transportation will start its full hearing into “The Financial State of the Airline Industry and the Implications of Consolidation.”
