Vladimir Putin-led Russia denied involvement after two stray Russian missiles landed in Poland, killing two of its citizens on Tuesday.
What Happened: The Russian Defense Ministry said any statements by Polish authorities or media about Russian missiles hitting Poland were a “deliberate provocation.”
“Russian firepower has launched no strikes at the area between the Ukrainian–Polish border,” the ministry wrote.
Two Polish citizens died in an explosion after two missiles crossing Ukraine’s border fell on Przewodow, a village in eastern Poland about 6 km away from the war-torn nation. Following this, the Polish authorities rushed for an emergency meeting of the country’s national security and defense council.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and global leaders will also meet on Wednesday after the Poland situation raised concerns that the Ukraine conflict could spill over its borders.
Special procedures had been put in place, including boosting combat readiness, Piotr Mueller, the Polish government spokesman, said. He said the authorities were also examining the possibility of triggering Article 4 of the NATO charter – which allows a member state to consult with one another when one of them feels its territorial integrity or security is at risk, reported the New York Times.
The Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zbigniew Rau, also summoned the ambassador of Russia to Poland and demanded an immediate and detailed explanation.
