Twitter is working on bringing Signal-like end-to-end encryption for its direct messages, or DMs, to ensure no one can spy on or hack private conversations.

What Happened: On Wednesday, Tech Tweeter, Jane Manchun Wong, shared a screenshot saying that the end-to-end encryption for DMs on Twitter for Android was in the works.

Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO and now Twitter chief Elon Musk seemingly acknowledged Wong's tweet with a wink emoji.

Wong further stated that Twitter worked on the feature previously in 2018 but abandoned its development.

Why It's Important: In April, Musk expressed his wish for Twitter to have end-to-end encryption for DMs to ensure security.

Unlike Signal and Meta Platforms Inc.'s META WhatsApp, Twitter DMs are not yet end-to-end encrypted.

One of Musk's recent decisions to monetize verification badges was not well received by users. Will this update help turn the tide?
