Facebook's 'Human-Level' AI Gamer Can Beat You At 'Diplomacy' Using Negotiation Skills

Meta Platforms Inc. META has unveiled a human-level artificial intelligence gamer that can play the strategy game, Diplomacy — but that is not the end.

What Happened: On Tuesday, Facebook launched CICERO, the "first AI to achieve human-level performance in the popular strategy game Diplomacy."

The "agent," as Facebook calls it, demonstrated its ability by playing on webDiplomacy.net, an online version of the game. CICERO achieved more than double the average score of the human players. It ranked in the top 10% of participants who played the game at least twice.

Meta, in a blog post, also included a statement from Andrew Goff, Diplomacy World Champion, who said CICERO doesn't get motivated by revenge but is ruthless in executing its strategy.

Having said that, Facebook admits that CICERO is far from being perfect. The "agent" sometimes generates "inconsistent dialogue that can undermine its objectives."

Why It's Important: In terms of future advancements, Meta plans to use the technology behind CICERO to advance human-AI interactions. The company said the technology is "relevant to many real-world applications."

For the unversed, Diplomacy is a board game first released in the 1950s. It is a game built on human interaction, not moves and maneuvers. Players sit around a table and negotiate or make strategic moves to win the game. There are no dice or cards involved, and everything is determined by a player's communication skills, according to Kotaku.
