Have you ever heard of a profitable company without a productive workforce? Every company depends on its employees to produce positive business outcomes, ushering in a prosperous future. While there are many studies out there to prove employee engagement has a measurable impact on a business's profitability, many leaders still fail to appreciate how employee engagement influences the bottom line. As a business leader, the well-being of your employees should be a primary concern.
Prior to the pandemic, employee engagement was rising globally, but progress has stalled. According to Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2022 Report, 60% of workers are emotionally detached at work, and 19% are miserable. If employees don’t have a stimulating workplace experience, they definitely will not be able to provide a satisfactory experience to customers, cutting profits and ROI investments significantly.
Business leaders worldwide must raise the bar on engagement. Employees want more than just a competitive salary and benefits (though these are—of course—very important); they also want a more rewarding work environment that gives them a sense of purpose and belonging. In spite of the data tying employee engagement to revenue, employee fulfillment is still considered a “nice to have” by many business leaders.
There is a direct connection business leaders now realize between a happy employee and a satisfied customer. For example, in a 2022 Poppulo survey of American and European C-suite and senior executives in enterprises with over 5,000 employees, 58% agree that providing excellent employee experiences translates to employees providing customers with an excellent experience.
Business leaders are putting their companies at risk by not understanding why their employees have low-performance levels and are overall dissatisfied. What can they do?
The first step is fixing all levels of communication.
What Enterprises Can Do
Employees want their hard work to be noticed and appreciated. They expect valuable feedback from management and expect their challenges and concerns to be addressed. To meet these expectations, C-suite executives must keep open lines of communication. In the same Poppulo survey, 67% of executives reported that poor internal communication has affected the success of their company initiatives—and 81% of those executives estimate that poor internal communication costs their business between $5M to $50M annually.
High-caliber teams of engaged employees are the most important component of company success. In fact, businesses with engaged workers have 23% higher profits than business units with miserable workers. According to Gallup's State of the Global Workplace: 2022 Report, teams with thriving workers also see higher customer loyalty, fewer accidents, and lower turnover and absenteeism.
Due to our hybrid and fully remote workspaces, employees require an increased flow of information with greater specificity to their roles and locations than ever before. It’s no secret that communication is the key to increased alignment for modern workforces. So how do we provide optimal communication strategies for our modern workforce? Tech companies like Poppulo, a communications and workplace experience software provider, believe they can provide the solution.
“Connecting people is at the heart of everything we do as an organization,” said David Levin, Poppulo’s CEO. Their communication and workplace experience platform, Poppulo Harmony, addresses organizations’ need to build stronger connections with employee and customer audiences through engaging communication workflows and optimized spaces. With communication at the center of their clients’ business strategies, they are driving employee engagement, which leads to higher revenue and happy customers.
Your employees are the face of your business, so your brand’s reputation is up to you. Improving the workplace for them isn’t as complicated as people make it seem—it’s not rocket science. Employees thrive in environments where they feel supported, and this is best accomplished through strong communication.
The best leaders know that an investment in their employees is also an investment in their organization and future success. Support and engage your employees with the right communication channels and watch your bottom line rise.
