What Happened: The U.S. was hit with a massive winter storm that claimed lives and property and led to power outages and large-scale cancellations of flights. Christmas eve on Saturday saw historically low attendance at theaters amid the storm, reported Box Office Mojo.

James Cameron's "Avatar" sequel clocked U.S. ticket sales of $56 million, down 58% from its debut week. The four-day weekend, including Monday, garnered $82 million for the movie, bringing the cumulative domestic box office receipts to $ 280 million in 11 days.

This marked the fourth-best 11-day performance after $308 million for “Top Gun: Maverick," $297 million for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" and $294 million for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."

The international market picked up some of the slack left by the domestic box office with ticket sales of $601.7 million for "Avatar: The Way Of Water." Worldwide collections now total $889.38 million, according to data provided by Box office Mojo.

The $56 million collection for "Avatar: The Way Of Water" in its second weekend marked a 58% drop from the debut weekend. A second-weekend drop is normal, although a 50%+ drop signals that the movie may not have solid long runs, said CNBC.

"Avatar: The Way Of Water" is now the fifth highest-grossing film world over. Paramount Global PARA and Skydance’s “Top Gun: Maverick” tops the charts for the year with worldwide ticket sales of $1.48 billion.

Price Action: Disney closed Friday’s session 1.55% higher at $88.01, while Paramount fell 1.65% to $16.66, according to Benzinga Pro data.
