Railroads Strong Despite Weak Tape (DJI, UNP, CSX, KSU)

Despite a lackluster day that saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) lose triple digit gains and close down 69 points, the railroads had an impressive showing today. Union Pacific UNP, the nation's largest railroad by revenue, rose $1.88, or 2.75%, to $70.12. Volume was strong with more than 5.4 million shares traded versus the 4.1 million three-month average daily volume. CSX Corporation CSX rose 58 cents, or 1.15%, to $50.82 while Kansas City Southern KSU rose 74 cents, or 2.05%, to $36.79.
