Nexus 7 Sales Grow Monthly, Encroaching on Apple's Territory

Asus, the manufacturer behind Google's GOOG first tablet, has provided a few hints regarding the overall success of the Nexus 7. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Asus CFO David Chang said that Google is now selling close to one million tablets per month. "At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K," said Chang. "This latest month, it was close to 1 million." At bare minimum, this means that Google has sold 1.5 million units (three months times 500,000 units). That figure could be closer to two million. These are impressive numbers, to say the least. While Apple AAPL is happily bragging about its worldwide sales of more than 100 million iPads, Google is slowly breaking into the industry. The Nexus 7 came several years after the iPad and had a smaller ad campaign but still managed to sell a large number of units. Regardless, some are bound to dismiss Google's success. Keep in mind, however, that Apple is more concerned about the Nexus 7 than anyone. During the company's most recent press event, Apple provided a side-by-side comparison of the Nexus 7 and its own iPad Mini. If Apple did not have anything to prove, it would not have mentioned its competitors. It will take Google several years (if not a lifetime) to catch Apple. By then, the Cupertino, California-based company might have moved on to other technology. Google is prepared to fight regardless. In addition to the original Nexus 7 (which has been upgraded with double the memory for both the $199 and $249 iterations), Google will release a 10-inch, high-resolution tablet for $399.
