Why New 'League of Legends' Trailer Is So Bad Riot Games Had To Apologize [VIDEO]

Following a tradition that started in 2018, Tencent TCEHY’s Riot Games released a new trailer for “League of Legends” (LoL) to announce the 2023 season of the video game.

Although, this year, the game's new cinematic trailer drew negative reactions from fans all over the world. The expectations were quite high, as last year’s trailer was considered one of the best the company had produced for the game, according to Kotaku.

The preview, called “The Brink of Infinity,” depicts the famous battleground of the game and two minutes of underwhelming narration. So, it’s understandable why the community took to social media and YouTube to express their discontent.

LoL's 2023 Trailer: The Fans Are Outraged

“I can't help but to feel sad about this, honestly. Cinematics were the only thing that NEVER disappointed from Riot, yet here we are…,” wrote a user below the YouTube video that amassed more than two million views.

“The most honest cinematic Riot has ever released, it reflects the exact state of the game, abandoned and emotionless,” voiced another disheartened fan.

Moreover, criticism points out that Riot is paying more attention to “Valorant,” which was released in 2020 and had an estimated 17 million active players, and is neglecting LoL.

What Does Riot Have To Say?

The video game developer, publisher, and esports tournament organizer based in Los Angeles responded with a Twitter thread apologizing to fans and explaining what happened.

A message from Riot about Season 2023:

We've launched a cinematic as a part of Season Start every year since 2018, and make no mistake: everyone on League knows how much you love them. So do we! (Thread)

First, Riot acknowledged there were “unprecedented circumstances” that led to choosing an “alternate approach” to the Season 2023 video, and recognized that the trailer had “missed the mark for the action-packed, champion-led trailer you expected and has led to further speculation about our investment in League.”

Furthermore, the company tweeted, “Honestly, we should have been more communicative, which might have helped with some of that feeling and speculation. We do believe that League has a bright future and we are investing in that, but we can do a better job of sharing those plans with you.”

Riot finished the thread by thanking the community for its comments. “We really appreciate your passion and feedback, and League’s success wouldn’t be possible without your dedication. Thank you.”
