Marijuana sales continue to skyrocket in New Mexico in 2023, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
Following strong December sales of more than $28 million, January cannabis figures were slightly lower with a total of $26 million in recreational cannabis purchased statewide, according to the Cannabis Control Division (CCD), which reported January sales.
The top-selling cities are Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces, with $78 million and slightly over $18 million, respectively for the ten months.
Medical marijuana sales for the first month of 2023 totaled $13.75 million. Combined medical and recreational marijuana sales reached $40.2 million.
In April 2021, New Mexico became the latest state to legalize adult-use cannabis after Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the Cannabis Regulation Act. A year later, the Land of Enchantment kicked off recreational weed sales. In the first weekend, New Mexicans spent $3.5 million on cannabis. "The new industry is projected to generate $300 million annually in sales, create 11,000 jobs and bring in $50 million in state revenue in the first year alone," according to the CCD.
