Despite Industry Headwinds, Some Cannabis MSOs Deepened Their Benches In 2022

Some of America's largest multi-state operators (MSOs) experienced growth in employee headcounts in 2022, despite reports of layoffs across the cannabis industry.

Companies such as Ascend Wellness Holdings AAWH, TerrAscend Corp. TRSSF, Ayr Wellness AYRWF, and Curaleaf Holdings CURLF saw an increase in their employee count last year compared to 2021, according to MjBizDaily citing securities filings.

Other MSOs — Trulieve Cannabis TCNNF, Cresco Labs CRLBF, Columbia Care CCHWF, and Verano Holdings VRNOF — saw a decrease in employee numbers last year.

Cannabis tech platforms Weedmaps MAPS and Leafly Holdings LFLY also experienced a reduction in their employee counts.

As the industry continues to mature and regulatory landscapes shift, it will be interesting to see how MSOs continue to navigate these challenges and opportunities while striving for sustainable growth and profitability.
