Putin's Master Plan: Expert Warns Russia Aims For Western Conquest With 'Unification of Everything'

Zinger Key Points
  • Russia is using spy ships to map critical underwater infrastructure off the British coast.
  • Russia and China "are gearing up for wider conflict,” Seely wrote.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for war with the West by sending spy ships to map wind farms and key cables off the British coast, according to U.K. senior MP Bob Seely.

“Our world is becoming markedly more dangerous. And Britain is not ready,” said Seely, who wrote his doctoral thesis on contemporary Russian warfare and serves on the Foreign Affairs committee.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine 15 months ago, resulting in a full-scale war on the European continent that shook the world, prompted experts on Russia and China to warn of a greater existential threat to Western society. Fear that China is preparing to invade Taiwan has also increased, and it appears Russia’s invasion of its neighbor has brought Putin and China’s President Xi Jinping closer.

“The sobering truth is that our potential adversaries, Russia in the West and China in the East, are gearing up for wider conflict,” Seely wrote in the Telegraph on Thursday, adding that “that does not mean that conflict will happen — preparation makes it less likely — but we must urgently (recognize) the extent of the threat to the current order.

The Warning: Seely believes Russia is preparing for “unconventional warfare,” where critical infrastructure and communications could be sabotaged, starving the West of energy, food and information flow. “Russia is probing for European vulnerabilities,” he wrote.

The expert fears Putin’s covert actions could draw the West into a full-scale hybrid war. “Current Russian military thinking sees conflict as combining military and non-military tools of state power — the 'unification of everything' — into a seamless whole to serve the Kremlin’s aims,” Seely said.

And it’s not just Russia.

Last October, the U.K.'s top cyber spy, Sir Jeremy Fleming, warned that Beijing’s increasing use of technology to control its citizens and possibly other countries “by shaping the world’s technology ecosystem,” is a growing concern.

“When it comes to technology, the politically motivated actions of the Chinese state is an increasingly urgent problem we must acknowledge and address," Fleming said.

To prepare for the possibility of Russia and China using cyber warfare to attack the U.K., Seely is asking Parliament about its capabilities to protect its critical underwater infrastructure because, he says, “a relatively small number of deep-sea sabotage operations could bring our world to a halt without a shot being fired.”

This century will witness a struggle between two versions of humanity: open societies versus closed, authoritarian societies using all forms of state power to oppress their own people and threaten others. It is a struggle that is not wanted, but one that cannot, and must not be lost, Seely warned.
