Warren Buffett-Backed BYD's Latest Hatchback EV Is Cheaper Than A Comparable Gas-Powered Car

The price of Warren Buffett-backed BYD Co Ltd‘s BYDDY BYDDF BEV hatchback Seagull starts at merely 73,800 yuan or about $10,660.

What Happened: BYD unveiled a bright yellow Seagull at the Shanghai Auto Show and commenced pre-sales pricing it at 78,000 yuan or $11,400, reported CarNewsChina.com. This is less than half the price of most available EVs and the car touched 10,000 orders in 24 hours since debut, the report added.

The company later announced the final price of the car — lower than pre-sale prices — as low as 73,800 yuan. A four-seater with five doors, Seagull is the smallest vehicle in BYD's Ocean series.

The new EV is cheaper than a common combustion engine car like the 2023 Honda Fit 1.5L ICE, notes CleanTechnica. Honda Fit starts from 89,800 yuan ($12,500).

With a 30.8 kWh battery and a top speed of 130 km/h, the hatchback can go from 0–50 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Further, charging to 80% takes about 30 minutes.
