Donald Trump Out, Pro Athletes In: NY's Met Gala Hosts Brittney Griner, Patrick Mahomes, Serena Williams & More

Banned from the Met Gala by Anna Wintour herself, Donald Trump was clearly not missed at "fashion's biggest night out" on Monday in New York. In addition to the usual, awesomely-clad standouts, a slew of pro athletes made the scene and grabbed the limelight, starting with WNBA superstar Brittney Griner.

“This time last year, I was missing my wife,” Cherelle Griner told Anthony (via Elle) per the Washington Post, “so to have her right here, to be in this moment — breathtaking.”

Basketball Greats Were In The House

Attendees such as NBA Hall-of-Famer Dwyane Wade and his actress wife Gabrielle Union, LA Clippers' Russell Westbrook and Canadian pro for the Oklahoma City Thunder Shai Gilgeous-Alexander all shared the stage with Griner.

Who Else? Tennis, NFL And Skiers

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl MVP as well as a recently pregnant Serena Williams and Roger Federer were among the night's top athletes to grace the gala. Stefon Diggs, the Buffalo Bills wide receiver, Eileen Gu the 19-year-old freestyle skier who represented China in 2022, tennis greats Andy Roddick, U.S. Open winner who retired in 2012 and Italy’s Matteo Berrettini all got into their best duds and posed for the cameras at the extravaganza - a fundraiser the for Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Who Dressed Brittney?

Griner wore a tan ensemble from Calvin Klein that included tailored trousers and a long overcoat that felt cool and confident. Cherelle Griner wore a strapless creamy beige dress with perfect visible stitching and a matching geometric-shaped bag.

Donald Trump?

Wintour, US Vogue editor-in-chief, told James Corden on The Late Late Show in 2017, that she’d never ever invite Trump back again, citing his treatment of women and her support for Hilary Clinton during her election bid against Trump.

Griner, who got a special shoutout from President Biden at the recent White House Correspondents Dinner, was detained at a Moscow airport in Feb. 2022 for possessing cannabis oil. She was released in Dec. 2022 in exchange for the notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. At the time, Trump called the prisoner exchange a "stupid and unpatriotic embarrassment for the USA!”
