Rivian Vans Delivered Over 75M Packages For Amazon In Less Than A Year

Electric vehicle company Rivian Automotive Inc RIVN’s Electric Delivery Vehicles (EDV) delivered over 75 million packages for e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc AMZN.

What Happened: Rivian EDVs are deployed in more than 500 cities and Amazon delivered over 75 million packages in them as of March 31, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said in a letter to shareholders.

Amazon ordered 100,000 EDVs from Rivian in 2019- an order expected to be delivered in full by 2030. Amazon commenced delivering packages in trucks in July.

“I regularly get notes from drivers who love the ease of operation, comfort, and advanced technologies the EDV provides,” Scaringe said in the letter.

Why It Matters: Under the 2019 agreement, Rivian can sell its EDVs only to Amazon until the fourth anniversary of the initial delivery date.

However, the Wall Street Journal reported in March that the two companies are renegotiating the exclusivity part of their agreement after Amazon ordered merely 10,000 vans for the year — 10,000 is at the lower end of the range stated by Amazon, the report added.

Meanwhile, Rivian is ramping up production in a bid to achieve profitability. The EV maker is on track to meet its production guidance of 50,000 vehicles in 2023, the CEO said.
